How to say “don’t want to” in Korean?
Saying “don’t want to” is easy in Korean. We just have to combine the “want to” (first and third person) form with the short and long negative forms. Therefore, there are 4 different combinations we can use to express the idea “don’t want to”.
First-person:
It is used to express own wishes or hope for something OR ask a question (to ask what the other person wants to do).
Structure: Verb Stem + 고 싶다
1. First person -고 싶다 + short negative form 안 = 안 + -고 싶다
2. First person -고 싶다 + long negative form -지 않다 = -고 싶지 않다
Examples:
가다 (to go): 안 가고 싶어요. / 가고 싶지 않아요. = I don’t want to go.
하다 (to do): 안 하고 싶어요. / 하고 싶지 않아요. = I don’t want to do (it).
보다 (to see): 안 보고 싶어요. / 보고 싶지 않아요. = I don’t want to see (it).
*안 보고 싶어요 / 보고 싶지 않아요 have another meaning — “I don’t miss you.”
Third-person:
It is used to indicate other people’s wishes in both statements and questions.
Structure: Verb Stem + 고 싶어 하다
1. Third person -고 싶어 하다 + short negative form 안 = 안 + -고 싶어 하다
2. Third person -고 싶어 하다 + long negative form -지 않다 = -고 싶어 하지 않다
Examples:
가다 (to go): 안 가고 싶어 해요. / 가고 싶어 하지 않아요. = (He/she/it) doesn’t want to go.
하다 (to do): 안 하고 싶어 해요. / 하고 싶어 하지 않아요. = (He/she/it) doesn’t want to do (it).
보다 (to see): 안 보고 싶어 해요. / 보고 싶어 하지 않아요. = (He/she/it) doesn’t want to see (it).
